Last weekend I spoke on a panel at the Next Level Knitting Conference about my work as a tech editor. I don’t spend much time on this blog talking about my tech editing work – mostly I write from my perspective as a designer and knitter. Today I’m going to give you a peak behind the curtain, so to speak, and talk about what tech editors do in this industry.
Tech editors are a more or less invisible part of the pattern development process. Knitting (and crochet) pattern designers rely on tech editors to make their patterns error-free and give the best possible knitting experience to the maker.
What they do for the designer
A tech editor not only proofreads a pattern and helps the designer maintain a consistent style and voice across patterns, they also check the numbers and can even help catch errors in grading (sizing). Tech editing ensures that abbreviations are consistently used and defined, and that charts match written pattern instructions.
Some tech editors can also help designers with creating digitized charts and/ or schematics.
As a designer, I always have my patterns checked by another tech editor. Why don’t I edit my own patterns? Because it’s really hard to catch your own mistakes. My tech editor helps me catch errors and inconsistencies that I wouldn’t necessarily see in my own work.
What they do for the knitter
Tech editors help to ensure that you, the knitter, have the best possible experience when knitting a pattern. They ensure that the designer uses consistent abbreviations, and that the pattern instructions are clear and easy to read. No pattern is guaranteed to be error-free; even with the best editing, small mistakes can slip through. But working from a well-edited pattern guarantees that the instructions will be as clear as possible, and give you a better chance at a frustration-free process.
